AMA Urges Reform to Improve Healthcare in Aged Care Homes

11 Jun 2026

Released during Aged Care Week in Sydney, the AMA’s new position statement highlights concerns that many aged care residents are not receiving timely and coordinated medical care, including regular access to general practitioners.

The organisation says ongoing problems within the aged care system are disrupting continuity of care, often weakening long-standing relationships between residents and their GPs after they move into aged care.

According to the AMA, regular and planned GP visits can help improve health outcomes and reduce reliance on emergency care. The current approach often results in crisis-driven treatment, which can lead to avoidable hospital visits and place additional pressure on the healthcare system.

The position statement calls for greater investment in integrated care models, fair funding arrangements, modern digital systems, and workforce planning to better support residents and healthcare providers.

The AMA said these reforms are needed to ensure aged care residents receive high-quality, person-centred care that reflects their individual health needs, preferences, and goals.

The recommendations are aligned with the new aged care legislation and broader health system priorities aimed at improving care for older Australians.
