Australia to Develop First National Living Menopause Guideline

Australia to Develop First National Living Menopause Guideline

03 Sep 2026

The guideline will be developed by the Australian Living Evidence Collaboration (ALEC) at Monash University, in partnership with leading health organisations including the Australasian Menopause Society, Endocrine Society of Australia, Jean Hailes for Women’s Health and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.

Over the next two years, the project will bring health professionals together to create clear, evidence-based guidance for caring for women during perimenopause and menopause.

The guideline will cover how menopause is diagnosed and assessed, treatment of menopause-related symptoms and important long-term health issues. It will also include guidance for the early years after menopause.

Unlike traditional guidelines, the new recommendations will be ‘living’ guidelines. This means they can be updated as new evidence becomes available.

The RACGP is also nominating a representative to join the steering committee. Draft recommendations will be released publicly so health professionals and others can provide feedback.

The project follows a 2024 Senate Inquiry, which found major gaps in menopause education and training for medical professionals. The inquiry raised concerns that many medical students receive very limited teaching on menopause, despite it affecting more than half the population.

Assistant Health and Ageing Minister Rebecca White said the guidelines will help health professionals provide more informed and consistent care to women experiencing perimenopause and menopause.
