COVID-19 vaccination program to shift to the NIP from October

19 Aug 2026

Under the new arrangements, COVID-19 vaccines will no longer be funded as a universal program. Free vaccines will instead focus on people considered most at risk of severe COVID-19.

From 1 October, free COVID-19 vaccines will be available to:

  • Adults aged 75 years and over, with one dose every six months
  • Adults aged 65–74 years, with one dose every 12 months
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50–74 years, with one dose every 12 months
  • Adults aged 18 years and over with severe immunocompromise, with one dose every 12 months

Until the transition takes place, providers can continue offering COVID-19 vaccines under the current NCVP arrangements.

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing said the change reflects the current COVID-19 situation in Australia, where the virus is now endemic and continues to have a greater impact on some groups.

Infectious diseases expert Professor Paul Griffin said the change should not be viewed as a sign that COVID-19 is no longer a serious health concern. He also highlighted the importance of making vaccination easy to access and ensuring eligible people can receive vaccines when needed.

From October, states and territories will manage vaccine ordering, distribution and reporting. Healthcare experts have raised concerns that differences between jurisdictions could create additional challenges for vaccine access.

The Australian Government will provide immunisation providers with updated guidance before the transition, including information on eligibility, vaccine ordering, reporting requirements and access arrangements.
