Doctors want stricter controls on baby formula ads

The AMA says some companies focus too much on making money instead of supporting babies and families. It warns that ads for formula, toddler milk, bottles and teats can discourage breastfeeding and take advantage of worried parents.
The group says the current voluntary rules are not doing enough. It points out that advertising is still everywhere, especially online and in stores.
The AMA is also worried about toddler milk products. These are often marketed in a way that also promotes infant formula, even though most young children do not need them.
It is calling for tougher laws that cover shops and pharmacies, reduce discounts, and limit how companies work with health professionals. It also wants a ban on companies sponsoring education for health workers.
The AMA supports a stronger version of the old MAIF agreement, with extra rules for retailers and toddler milk marketing. It says this would better protect families and the health system.
The group is also asking health professionals to complete a short survey about their experiences with formula marketing.
