Expedited Pathway Attracts Nearly Half of Overseas-Trained GPs

The pathway opened in October 2024 to speed up registration for eligible Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs).
Between October 2024 and December 2025, 476 applications were approved through the pathway. This included 419 GPs, while 46 SIMGs completed all requirements and received unconditional registration.
The evaluation found that 80% of applications were completed within six weeks. The estimated cost of the pathway was around $8,000.
About 88% of participants were undertaking supervised practice in Distribution Priority Areas (DPAs) or Districts of Workforce Shortage areas. However, only 11% were working in rural and remote locations.
RACGP Rural Chair Associate Professor Michael Clements said the figures highlight concerns with the current DPA system. He argued that many doctors are still choosing to work in cities or areas close to major cities, while rural communities continue to face GP shortages.
He also called for changes to other parts of the registration process, including Medicare provider numbers and visa arrangements.
The evaluation found that 90% of stakeholders would recommend the pathway to other SIMGs, while 82% reported a positive overall experience.
A separate consultation report found that the pathway appears to be achieving its main purpose, but recommended clearer information for SIMGs and employers.
The evaluation also recommended better guidance on costs and timeframes, a more structured introduction to the Australian health system for overseas-trained doctors, and continued support and resources for supervisors.
Medical Board of Australia Chair Dr Susan O’Dwyer welcomed the findings, saying the pathway is helping improve access to specialist medical services across Australia.
