Free Pneumococcal Vaccine Expanded Under National Immunisation Program
30 Jun 2026
The updated program expands eligibility to more than 1.8 million Australians. Adults can now receive a free pneumococcal vaccine from 65 years of age, instead of 70. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, eligibility has been lowered from 50 years to 25 years.
Adults aged 18 years and over with certain medical conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are also now eligible for a free vaccine under the NIP.
Capvaxive is approved for adults aged 18 years and older and helps protect against pneumococcal disease caused by 21 bacterial strains. Eligible adults who have previously received a pneumococcal vaccine can receive Capvaxive at least 12 months after their last dose.
Health experts say the updated schedule is simpler and will make it easier for GPs and other immunisation providers to identify who is eligible for vaccination.
The Pneumovax 23 vaccine is no longer recommended for children or adults, with experts saying newer conjugate vaccines provide stronger and longer-lasting protection.
Pneumococcal disease can lead to serious infections affecting the lungs, brain, spinal cord and bloodstream. Health professionals are encouraging eligible Australians to speak with their GP about vaccination, particularly during the winter months when the risk of infection is higher.
