GPs Encouraged to Build Work–Life Balance Early in Their Careers

The video features GPs from across Australia, including RACGP leaders, medical educators and registrars. It shows doctors spending time on hobbies, with family and on activities outside medicine that support their wellbeing.
The initiative was developed as an educational resource for GP registrars. Its aim is to show that maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life can support wellbeing, job satisfaction and a long career in general practice.
Dr Vanessa Matabang, RACGP WA Core Education Head of Training, said doctor wellbeing is both an individual and workplace responsibility.
She said poor wellbeing and burnout can affect doctors at every stage of their careers and may also affect workforce sustainability and the quality of patient care.
The campaign follows findings from the RACGP’s Health of the Nation 2025 report. It found that only 47% of GPs felt they could maintain a good work–life balance, while 69% reported experiencing burnout in 2025.
Dr Julie McClellan, RACGP National Lead Medical Educator – Registrar Wellbeing, said the project was created after the GPs in Training Wellbeing Committee identified a need for practical resources about maintaining wellbeing during a medical career.
She said developing healthy habits during training can influence how doctors work throughout their careers.
The campaign encourages registrars to consider their own priorities, relationships and interests outside medicine and to make time for them alongside their professional responsibilities.
