GPs Urge Australians Not to Ignore RSV Risks This Winter
11 Jun 2026
RSV is a common seasonal virus, but it can lead to serious illness, hospitalisation and even death, particularly in babies, older adults and people at higher risk of complications.
A public health message has urged Australians not to underestimate the impact of RSV and to consider vaccination, while also speaking to their regular GP for personalised advice and support.
Since the maternal RSV vaccine became available in February 2025, more than 225,000 mothers have been vaccinated. During the same period, RSV cases in young children have fallen by more than 9%, dropping from 86,000 cases in 2024 to 78,000 in 2025.
In May, the federal government expanded access by adding RSV vaccination for people aged 75 and over to the National Immunisation Program.
Health organisations, including the Australian Medical Association, continue to encourage vaccine conversations through initiatives such as the “Have the Jab Chat” campaign, which promotes trusted discussions between patients and their GPs.
GPs are emphasising that vaccination advice should be based on qualified, personalised medical guidance to ensure people make informed decisions about their health.
