The RACGP recently held its fourth Rural Showcase, bringing together GP registrars, rural practices and health organisations from across NSW.

The event, held in Parramatta, was introduced in 2024 to help metropolitan and composite registrars connect with practices in areas where more doctors are needed.

RACGP NSW&ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman said these connections can play an important role in encouraging more doctors to consider working in rural communities.

The event included a panel discussion with rural doctors, giving registrars the chance to hear about their experiences and learn what day-to-day general practice can be like outside major cities.

Rural practice can provide GPs with a broad range of clinical experiences while allowing them to build strong relationships with local communities.

The Showcase also encouraged registrars to consider rural placements and explore the possibility of developing a long-term career in regional Australia.

Dr Hoffman said initiatives such as the Rural Showcase are part of wider efforts to attract and support the next generation of rural GPs.

The event comes after the Medical Board of Australia recently accredited the RACGP and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine’s Rural Generalist training programs.
