Under the new program, endorsed GP prescribers at selected clinics will receive up to $600 per patient to help cover the cost of ADHD assessments and follow-up appointments for people aged six years and older.

The funding can be used for administration, pre-assessment tools and input from other healthcare professionals. The subsidised ADHD consultations will be available at selected GP clinics from early 2027.

The package also includes:

  • $2.7 million to help GPs complete endorsed prescriber training.
  • $5.7 million to provide specialist support from paediatric and psychiatry services.
  • $1.8 million to encourage ongoing uptake of the reforms and improve access to allied health assessments and diagnostic support.

RACGP NSW and ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman welcomed the investment, saying it will improve access to ADHD care, especially in Western Sydney, South Western Sydney and other high-need communities.

She said ADHD assessments often require longer appointments, and Medicare rebates do not always cover the full cost. The new funding is expected to reduce or remove out-of-pocket expenses for many patients.

More than 1,400 GPs across NSW have already registered as continuing ADHD prescribers, helping around 15,000 people access ADHD medicines more easily.

NSW GP Dr Kim Vu, who is completing ADHD prescriber training, said the expanded scope of practice will help more patients receive timely care. He said the training has already changed the way he identifies and supports people living with ADHD.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the funding is designed to make ADHD care more affordable and accessible while making better use of the skills of GPs and community pharmacists.
