RACGP Launches Men’s Health Group to Tackle Gender Health Gap
19 Jun 2026
The group’s inaugural Chair, Dr Alex Romain, says men continue to experience poorer health outcomes than women, including lower life expectancy and reduced engagement with healthcare services. He says general practice is key to addressing these issues through better-designed, more accessible services.
Dr Romain believes improvements can be made across system design, consultation approaches and service delivery to better meet the needs of male patients. He says the aim is to combine current research and use it more effectively in general practice.
He was inspired to focus on men’s health after reading Of Boys and Men by British author Richard V Reeves, which prompted him to reconsider long-standing assumptions about why men die earlier than women in Australia.
The new group has been endorsed by the RACGP Board and is the first Specific Interests Group established for 2026. It is also the 39th group within the college.
The launch comes during Men’s Health Week, which this year highlights the importance of encouraging men to visit their GP regularly. Data shows younger men visit GPs less often than women, and many deaths among men under 75 are considered potentially preventable.
The RACGP says general practice remains the main point of contact for improving long-term health outcomes for Australian men and boys.
