RACGP launches new committee to strengthen Australia’s GP workforce
21 Aug 2026
The RACGP has established a new expert committee to help shape Australia’s GP workforce, with a focus on planning, funding, training and long-term workforce needs.
The RACGP Expert Committee – GP Workforce (REC–GPW) will provide national advice on policies and systems needed to build and support a strong GP workforce.
Associate Professor Michael Clements has been appointed Chair. The committee also includes RACGP members Dr Beth Allin, Dr John Inderhaug and Associate Professor Jill Benson.
External members include National Rural Health Commissioner Professor Jenny May, Monash University health economist Professor Tony Scott, and Director Indigenous Regulatory Practice Ms Jayde Fuller.
Professor Clements said the committee brings together strong clinical, research and economic expertise. He said its work would focus on using evidence and data to support better workforce decisions.
The committee will advise the RACGP Board and examine where GPs are needed across Australia. While rural and remote communities remain an important focus, the committee will also look at areas such as outer metropolitan communities, culturally diverse populations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities experiencing limited access to GPs.
It will collect workforce data, work with government and other stakeholders, and assess how training places and GP allocations can better match community needs.
Professor Clements said the RACGP has a responsibility to ensure doctors are trained and supported to work in communities where they are most needed.
