Review Completed into Rural Health Commissioner Framework in Australia

23 Jun 2026

The independent review examined the rules under Part VA of the Health Insurance Act 1973 to assess how well they support the role of the National Rural Health Commissioner in improving health outcomes in rural and remote areas.

National Rural Health Commissioner oversees national efforts to strengthen healthcare access outside major cities, and the review focused on whether the current legal framework is effective in supporting these responsibilities.

The review was led by Mr Mark Booth and looked at how the Commissioner’s functions are defined and whether any changes are needed to improve rural health outcomes.

The final report was tabled in the Australian Parliament on 22 June 2026.
