Victorian Pill Testing Service reports strong demand after first year in Fitzroy

The free, legal and confidential service operates from 95 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

During its first 12 months, more than 3,000 people visited the service and over 5,000 drug samples were tested.

Harm reduction workers also held more than 2,500 conversations with people using the service. For around one in three visitors, it was the first time they had discussed drug use with a trained professional in a safe and non-judgemental setting.

The service also helps identify substances that may pose unexpected risks. Over the year, it issued 28 general drug notifications and two urgent drug notifications about concerning or unexpected substances found in tested samples.

These alerts provide timely information about emerging drug risks and support health authorities in responding to potential threats.

The Victorian Government has committed funding for another two years, allowing both the Fitzroy fixed site and the mobile pill testing service to continue operating across Victoria.
